This August in London, National Geographic in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), The Walt Disney Company UK & Ireland, and Make-A-Wish® UK came together and made one young boy’s dream come true.
Liam, who was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma at just three years old, is now in remission after years of treatment in the UK and US. Throughout his journey, one passion has remained constant: his love of animals, and his dream of becoming a nature documentary presenter.
“He wants to be a presenter and he loves animals and nature,” shared Liam’s mum. “He’s got an amazing connection with animals that I’ve rarely seen.”
When Liam’s wish reached National Geographic EMEA, the CreativeWorks team – National Geographic’s in-house storytelling studio – designed a once-in-a-lifetime experience. With support from Anima Films and the team at London Zoo, Liam was given the chance to film and co-host his very own wildlife film alongside National Geographic Explorer and presenter Liz Bonnin.
Sara Hanson, Director, CSR, The Walt Disney Company EMEA, said: “This is the very first time that Make-A-Wish have come together and collaborated with National Geographic in our region and what an honour it has been to make it Liam’s wish. Everyday we strive to create Moments of joy, comfort and togetherness for children when they need it the most, and this is a fantastic example of how our partners and iconic brands can come together to create a very special and unforgettable experience that only Disney can deliver. A huge thank-you to all our partners involved and the National Geographic team for helping to make this happen.”
On filming day at London Zoo, Liam experienced every part of being a presenter, from rehearsals and cue cards to interviewing keepers and meeting reptiles, insects, and even Galápagos tortoises. His family proudly looked on as he stepped confidently into the role, impressing everyone on set.
“I love working with children who are passionate about nature and presenting,” said Liz Bonnin. “He’s been an absolute joy to work with.”
Liam now has his very own film, “The Secret Lives of Reptiles, Reefs and Arthropods with Liam and Liz”, which will premiere on his YouTube channel and kickstart his presenting career.
Liam’s dad reflected: “Liam is a special boy and he has a deep connection with nature. We’re very grateful that you allowed him to do this and he enjoyed himself”.
Liam’s mum added: “You’ve made our day, Liam’s day, year and life.”
Over the last three years, Disney has delivered over 145,000 transformative moments for UK children and those closest to them when they need it most.
